Heads up - this blog post is more than 6 months old. Some details may be out of date.

Our gas is now 100% carbon neutral

We’re the biggest supplier of green gas in the UK, providing all our members with 10% green gas. From today, we’re offsetting the rest by supporting carbon reduction projects around the world. It’s our greenest gas yet.

We’re on a mission to lower bills and cut carbon emissions, so we’re proud to be the biggest supplier of green gas in the UK. All our members are supplied with 10% green gas, which is 30 times higher than the national average. But we want to do more. From today, we’re offsetting emissions from the rest of the gas we supply. Our gas is now 100% carbon neutral.

Our greenest gas yet

We’ve supplied 10% green gas since 2016 and now we’re going to offset the rest by funding carbon reduction projects across the world. From now on, for every tonne of carbon emitted we will purchase an offset through our partner ClimateCare (a fellow B Corp). These purchases support carbon reduction projects in the developing world.

This means that from today, we’ll supply all our members with 100% carbon neutral gas. We’ll continue to supply 10% green gas, and we’ll be offsetting the rest. This change will come at no extra cost to our members.

How carbon offsetting works

Carbon offsetting is an internationally recognised way to take responsibility for the carbon you emit. Carbon offset projects allow people or companies to invest in carbon reduction projects around the world to balance out their own carbon emissions. We measure carbon emissions in tonnes. Offsetting one tonne of carbon means there will be one less tonne of carbon in the atmosphere than there otherwise would’ve been.

For example, some carbon offset projects focus on protecting forests. Conserving trees, which absorb and store carbon, helps to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. Carbon offset projects which support the conservation of forests stop practices like logging, conversion to agriculture or mining in the world’s rainforests. Keeping the rainforest standing means tonnes of carbon are kept in the trees, rather than released into the atmosphere. Each tonne is sold as a carbon credit to offset emissions.

Every carbon offset certificate we buy is verified through one of three internationally-recognised standards: the Gold Standard, the Verified Carbon Standard, or the UNFCCC’s Clean Development Mechanism. All make sure there is a robust audit trail, ensuring the carbon savings are additional to what would have happened without the project and sustained over time.

Working with ClimateCare to fund a variety of projects

We gave a lot of thought to which projects we wanted to work with. Many projects have benefits beyond carbon savings. Projects can create local jobs, reduce air pollution, improve health, provide access to clean energy and conserve biodiversity in the places where they are located. We worked with our partner, ClimateCare, to carefully select a portfolio of projects. We asked Bulb employees to vote on their favourite portfolio, too.

Bulb helps to fund several carbon reduction projects across the world, including renewable energy projects like solar and wind farms in India, bio-digester projects in China, rainforest protection in Sierra Leone, and clean-cooking stoves in Ghana and Kenya.

Three billion people worldwide cook using polluting fuels like charcoal and 3.8 million people die each year from illnesses related to these cooking methods. Traditional stoves need a lot of fuel, making this way of cooking expensive, and they contribute massively to climate change. We’re proud to be supporting BURN cookstoves, who are revolutionising the cookstoves market in East Africa. Their Jikokoa stove uses 45% less charcoal, saving families $250 per year. Not to mention saving carbon, forests - which would’ve been cut down for fuel - and lives.

Continuing on our mission to save carbon

This is a big milestone on our mission to reduce emissions. We’re proud to take positive action to reduce our members’ emissions wherever we can. But we know that offsetting carbon emissions isn’t the silver bullet that will solve climate change. Offsetting should always be part of a wider strategy to reduce emissions. So we’ll keep looking for opportunities to increase the proportion of green gas we supply, and to build better products and services that help our members to reduce their energy usage. We’re doing that already with Smart meters, our Smart Tariff and our Feed-in Tariff. And from now on, we’ll always supply 100% Carbon Neutral gas.

You can read more about carbon offsets in our help centre. And as always, we’d love to know what you think. Join the conversation in the Bulb Community.

We’ve made Bulb HQ completely carbon neutral too.

We don’t buy any gas from fracked sources.
