We’re partnering with Samsung to help you get more out of your smart meter

Bulb and Samsung have teamed up to provide a new tool members can use to understand their energy usage and make smarter, greener decisions at home. In this post, find out how you can use the SmartThings app to save on your bills and cut carbon.

We're big fans of smart meters. They're a foundational element in making energy simpler, cheaper and greener. To make the most of them, our members need useful digital tools to help them understand their energy usage. We know that with that information, our members can use less energy, save on their bills and lower carbon emissions.

That's why we're excited to announce that we're working with Samsung to provide a new tool to help our members do this. From today, Bulb members with smart meters will be able to monitor their energy use in (almost) real-time and control smart home devices based on that data through the SmartThings app.

We're thrilled about this because it's a bit of a first. We're turning the pipedreams and promises of the smart home into something concrete, useful and democratic. It's not just for early adopters any more, it's not just a 'beta', it's a real tool that gets energy information off the wall and into the phone. And it lets you connect that information with practical everyday stuff like when the washing machine comes on. Saving you money. Reducing your carbon impact. Integrating energy into the smart home revolution is a crucial step in making 'smartness' more than a marketing buzzword.

That's also why we're delighted to be the first energy supplier to work with a business like Samsung on such a large-scale integrated service.

You can download the SmartThings app – for free. It's available for iOS in the App Store and Android in the Google Play Store. And, if you've got a Bulb account, a SMETS2 smart meter and a Chameleon In-Home Display (IHD) connected to your Wi-Fi you can link them all together using the inbuilt SmartThings Energy Control Service.

(The IHDs we provide when your smart meter is installed are manufactured by Chameleon. If another supplier installed your smart meter you might not be able to use the SmartThings Energy Control.)

In the app, you'll be able to see detailed, up to the minute information about your energy usage, and you can share that with everyone in your household.

And that same app will let you control thousands of compatible smart home products so you can integrate your smart meter with your smart home. You can connect things like thermostats, lighting and washing machines. And you can even control your existing non smart devices by adding a smart plug to devices such as kettles, coffee machines and lamps.

In the next couple of months we're adding more features that will do even more: The app will integrate with our Smart Tariff - and advise you how much you’ll be able to save if you can shift some of your energy use out of the most expensive parts of the day.

And, as well as telling you about your energy usage and how much it costs, it will also report on carbon intensity. So you can make greener decisions about when to use energy.

This feels like something big to us; the start of a new phase in energy where people get the information and control they need to make smarter, greener decisions. If you're already a Bulb member, here's how to get started. If you're not a Bulb member yet, find out more about Samsung SmartThings.
