Smart meters are being installed by every energy supplier as part of a nationwide upgrade to the energy system. They help suppliers to forecast demand and source greener energy for the grid. So, as well as some useful home benefits, they're an important step towards managing our national energy better in the future. If you don’t have your smart meters yet, check if you’re eligible and book your installation.

Our smart meter installation target for 2022

To make sure every home and business benefits from smart meters, there’s a framework for the smart meter rollout. It sets binding annual installation targets for every supplier and will run until the end of 2025. The framework is set by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and regulated by Ofgem, the energy regulator.

For 2022, Bulb has a target of 143,565 electricity smart meter installations and 111,777 gas smart meter installations.

We plan to install 252,789 smart meters in domestic properties and 2,553 in business properties. Of those installations we plan for 219,277 of them to be credit meters and 36,066 to be top up (prepayment) meters.

The detail and publication of the target formula are available in the supplier licence conditions Electricity SLC 39A and the supplier licence conditions for Gas SLC 33A.
