1. Our business

B Corp score

Being a B Corp means we've been through a rigorous process to make sure we meet the highest standards of social performance, environmental good and accountability.

B Corps are certified every 3 years. We last certified in 2018 and we scored 94.3. The minimum score to certify is 80, so we were delighted with our result.

Each B Corp is marked against a number of different impact areas. Here’s how our scoreboard looked in 2018.

Gender pay gap

The gender pay gap is the percentage difference between average hourly earnings for men and women in the UK. The ONS reported a national pay gap of 8.9% in 2019.

On average, men are paid 11.39% more than women at Bulb. This is an increase from 2019, when our mean hourly pay gap was +6% in favour of men. On average, women's bonuses are 7.8% lower than men's at Bulb. 

Since our last report, Bulb's gender pay gap has widened. This is because we’ve hired more women into the lowest pay quartile, which tends to be made up of customer service roles. While the number of women in the upper pay quartiles has increased, men still make up 65% of this population. Technology roles make up a higher proportion of these quartiles.

Across the technology industry, women are under-represented, and make up around 17% of tech roles. At Bulb, around 20% of tech roles are held by women, and we’re working on ways to further improve diversity in our technology teams. You can read our full report on the blog.

Data from latest snapshot, 5 April 2020. There were 700 people in team Bulb at the time. We want to acknowledge that some of our team members do not identify as gender binary. When we calculate these figures, we use the binary gender identity people choose when they register with HMRC; either male or female.

Energy Switch Guarantee

The Energy Switch Guarantee is a mandatory set of promises made by energy suppliers to their members. We signed up to the guarantee in August 2016. As part of our promise, we’re committed to reporting back to our members on how we’re performing.

Complaints at Bulb

We regularly check on the number of complaints we receive, and the underlying issues causing those complaints. We report to the energy regulator, Ofgem, on our progress. By listening to what we're doing wrong, we can put those things right.

4. Energy and emissions

Our Fuel mix

100% renewable electricity

We supply all our UK members with 100% renewable electricity from wind, solar and hydro power. Between April 2019-2020, the breakdown looked like this:

100% carbon neutral gas

We provide 100% carbon neutral gas to all our members in the UK. We offset the emissions from the gas we supply by supporting carbon reduction projects around the world. 

Between April 2020 and March 2021, we offset 97% of the gas we supplied members, and 3% came from renewable sources. The breakdown for that green gas between April 2019 - March 2020 was:

In 2020, we helped our members lower their carbon impact by 5,680,706 tonnes across the UK, France, Spain and USA. The average Bulb member lowers their carbon impact by 3.2 tonnes of CO2 a year.
